How many treatments will I need?Weekly acupuncture is the norm to begin with, reducing in frequency as your body responds. The effect is usually felt within five or six treatments. Sometimes, just one or two treatments are enough. At the first treatment, we will be able to tell you how many treatments are likely to be necessary.
-
Are there any side effects?Research studies conducted in 2011 and 2012 concluded that when practiced by properly trained and qualified traditional acupuncturists, such as members of the British Acupuncture Council, the risk of adverse effects from acupuncture is extremely low. Occasionally a small bruise can appear at a needle site. Sometimes people can feel tired after a treatment but this passes quickly. Most patients enjoy the deep relaxation that comes with having an acupuncture treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt?Acupuncture needles are much finer than the needles used for injections and blood tests, so fine that you may not even feel them being inserted. It is normal to feel a mild tingle or dull ache as the needles are adjusted. This feeling only lasts for a number of seconds and the benefits of treatment should outweigh any momentary discomfort. When the needles are in place most people feel deeply relaxed, which often continues once they are removed. The single-use sterile needles come in sealed packs that will be opened in front of you and they are safely disposed after every treatment.

What happens when I have a treatment? On your first visit, we will take a full case history and you will be able to discuss the issues that concern you. We will draw up an individual treatment plan based on a detailed discussion of your state of health, medical history, any other treatment you are receiving, as well as your lifestyle to find solutions to help you feel better. This first visit takes an hour and a half and includes the first treatment. If you are attending for a painful/muscular skeletal problem, the treatment may include massage and heat treatment and you may be given simple remedial exercises that you can continue at home to help improve your condition. You should bring a note of any medication you are taking. If you are on medication, it is always a good idea to let your GP know you are having acupuncture.

What do I need to bring?Once you decide that you like yoga, it is useful to purchase your own yoga mat so that you can practice at home and even take it on holiday! I recommend you obtain a mat with a reasonable thickness to protect your knees. You also need a mat that grips well and is long enough for you to stretch out fully on it. You may also want to bring a blanket, especially in the winter months for the Savasana or relaxation. Wear comfortable, loose clothing in which you can move.

What is a class like?My classes follow the format of a ‘yoga flow’, allowing you to move continuously for the duration of the session, taking rest phases when you need. The aim of this style is to allow you to relax as much as possible during the class and focus on how your body feels as you progress through a series of yoga postures. We usually begin class with a series of breathing exercises. Evidence has shown that learning these powerful exercises help you to enhance lung function and calm anxiety.
-
Who is the class for?The class is suitable for all ages and abilities and will enable you to gain the know-how to continue your own beneficial yoga practice at home. Sometimes people think they are too old to start yoga - you are never too old to start! All participants will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire before starting class, so that we can make any adaptations and modifications to ensure you can practice safely. There is plenty of repetition of key yoga postures, allowing you to gain familiarity and adapt and develop these to enhance the effectiveness and comfort of each posture for your own body. At the end of our class, we always take a “Savasana” or deep relaxation that enables your body to release tension and restore vitality. Our classes are friendly and fun and there are plenty of giggles along the way!
"I haven’t felt so well for years! So much better now, thank you! I wasn’t sleeping, hardly at all, felt really down and had constant aching in my neck and shoulders. Now, all that has gone. I hardly have any pain and feel better than I have for ages! I sleep better too.
I actually enjoyed my acupuncture treatments, very relaxing and the neck and shoulder exercises you gave me are really helpful. It’s a lovely clinic, I felt as though I could really relax."
